Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is made by gluing together layers of dimensioned lumber at right angles to one another, creating a panel that is strong, stable, and durable.
Glue-laminated timber (GLT or glulam) is made by gluing together layers of dimensioned lumber, creating a structural member with increased strength and stiffness compared to the individual pieces of wood used.
Finger-jointed lumber is made by bonding together shorter pieces of wood (known as "fingers") to create longer, stronger, and more stable boards.
Both CLT and glulam have excellent load-bearing capabilities, with strength and stiffness properties comparable to or better than concrete and steel.
When exposed to fire, mass timber forms a char layer on the surface that acts as insulation, protecting the uncharred wood underneath.
